Coloring Easter Eggs with Toddlers

Coloring Easter eggs with toddlers can be tricky. You want them to have the experience, but you could live without the mess. Here’s a different way to color Easter eggs that is perfect for your toddler AND kids of all ages! Not only will you end up with beautiful, colored eggs, but also with colored rice to play with later!

Fill plastic containers 2/3 full of uncooked rice. Make sure your plastic containers have a tight fitting lid! Using food color drops, we added 6-10 drops of food coloring to each container (depending on how bright they wanted their colors) to plain white rice. I let the girls experiment with color mixing to create new colors.

Securely fasten the lids to each container and let the fun begin!

Shake the containers for at least a minute (we played music and made it into a freeze dance/shake game) or until your eggs and rice are a color you are happy with. If you want them brighter, add a few more drops of food coloring.

In the end, you will have colored hard-boiled eggs, with really cool texture marks, and colored rice to play with later. It was neat to see how the color mixing worked as well.
