Shape Collages

shape collages
These shape collages were simple to prepare and a great learning experience! I cut 6 pieces of paper into different, large shapes. I used some of my scrap paper to cut smaller shapes. B glued the smaller shapes onto the bigger, matching shape. He was excited (mostly because he got to use glue).

This picture shows how I had it set up at the table. He moved spot to spot to make a collage from the various shapes. If you are introducing shapes, just work with one shape at a time.
Other Variations:
*Put the smaller shapes in a pile in the middle of the table and challenge your child to sort and glue them onto the correct shape (instead of already having them next to each other and ready to go).
*On a large piece of construction paper, put dots in the shape of a triangle (or another shape) and have your child glue the smaller triangles onto the dots to form the shape.

We often have shape days where we talk about a particular shape. We go for walks and look for that shape, we only eat things of that shape (Cheese, lunch meat, crackers, fruit, bread, cut into the shape.) My girls love it, they LOVE exploring. It also works well with colors...but be prepared to get creative with lunch. I have used food dye on various things to make lunch work.
