B doesn’t necessarily understand the concept of larger numbers yet, but he shows interest in pointing them out and identifying them. When he started arguing with me in the grocery store that the number was three one instead of thirty one, I decided I needed to find an activity that would let us have fun with numbers and at the same time give me a chance to model the correct way to say them.

I found these Number Families at Home Grown Hearts. She explains how to refer to the numbers in the number families (This is the 30s family. That number is in the 80s family) and different ways to use them. They are awesome!
*I printed one set to make a large mat (pictured above) another set that I cut apart for matching on that large mat.
*I also printed a set and cut it apart into the families and attached with a brad to have in the car. (pictured above)
*I also printed some on plain white paper to use with our dot painters.

We’ve had fun counting together, finding patterns on the large numbers mat, putting magnetic pom poms (the idea also from Home Grown Hearts) on certain numbers, and finding numbers while we are in the car. I’m sure there will be a ton of ways for us to use these as he gets older too.

**Update: Home Grown Hearts does not offer this printable anymore. The link above has been fixed to send you to a similar printable that can be used in the same way.

What fun! It would be great to bring this alone on a trip and look for the numbers.

We will have to wait and see about JDaniel's allergies. He takes allergy medicine year round. The spring pollen really get him and always has.
